93rd Sutherland Highlanders Storming the Walls of Begum Kothi
Orlando Norie, c. 1858

The 93rd Sutherland Highlanders played a major part in the relief of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. The strongly fortified Begum Kothi was attacked on 11th March 1858 and artillery fire formed a small breach in the wall for the soldiers to storm. The work depicts the moment of the storming and a piper plays to the left of the picture. It was recorded that Pipe Major John McLeod continued playing throughout the action to encourage the men.
