Art Funded by you

A View near the Coast

Thomas Gainsborough, 1750

This picture was probably painted when the artist was living in Foundation Street, Ipswich. On the right is a grove of trees with a cottage and church tower, and in the centre a group of peasants with cows and ponies. On the left a rough road descends to lower ground by the shore with its sweep of the coastline. A cart and sleeping figure of a man are shown beside the road.
