Album of 12 views of Monmouthshire

Henrietta Maria Bowdler, 1789

This is a collection of 12 detailed pencil drawings made in June 1789 when Henrietta Maria, or Harriett, Bowdler visited her friend at Piercefield House near Chepstow. Piercefield was a highpoint on the Wye Tour but there are surprisingly few contemporary views from the house itself. Henrietta was a friend of George Smith's daughter who bought Piercefield from the ruined Valentine Morris in 1784. These drawings are therefore significant not just for their content but also for the close connection between the artist and the owners of Piercefield.
