Album of twenty nine portraits by Amsler, four by other artists and a sheet of figure studies and miscellaneous sketches. Amsler lived in Rome 1816-1820, artistic life in Rome at this time was dominated by expatriate Germans and Amsler's arrival in the city coincided with the period when the Nazarenes were beginning to be accorded widespread public recognition. Amsler was not a Nazarene but was closely associated with artists of the Nazarene movement such as Koch, Cornelius and Overbech.
