The work is a close-up view of nature and may have been made in the camera obscura Linnell had recently acquired. The artist had started attending a Baptist chapel in 1811 which completely transformed his approach to art and he began to study landscape as the work of a divine Creator. Linnell never painted watercolours for exhibition or sale.
