An Estuary by Moonlight

Aert van der Neer, 1603–1677

Aert van der Neer was one of the most prominent specialists in Dutch nocturnal landscapes, painting night scenes of idyllic landscapes of luminous beauty throughout the whole of his career. His technique was at its richest when he painted on panel, and his simple ideas of composition achieve their effect on a small scale.
