At the time of acquisition, the candlestick was thought to be a forgery and therefore not included in the Review. It is now known to be a late Saxon or early twelfth century pricket-candlestick. In 2004 the Art Fund completed its first fully comprehensive audit and in the process discovered a small number of previously unrecorded items including this work. The works had formed part of larger collections presented through the Art Fund and the museums concerned did not report their details to us at the time they were donated.
