Innes's early death and the consequent rarity of his pictures had previously made it impossible for the National Museum of Wales to secure a first-rate example of the work of a Welsh artist of whom Wales is justly proud. Although of small dimensions, the picture is charged with the intensity of feeling that gives Innes's best landscapes their remarkable vitality. Beyond a field in the foreground, and a row of red-roofed cottages, are the wave-like rhythms of the brown foothills of the Pyrenees. Above these the snowy pyramid of Mt. Canigou rises majestically into the cloud-dappled sky.
