Art Funded by you

Capstan salt

Unknown artist, 1580

Photo: courtesy of Sotheby's

This salt is plain and without a cover which was entirely appropriate for a fairly successful merchant's table. This type of salt would have been a common type of plate in the late 16th or early 17th century but their plainness meant that they did not tend to be valued and few have survived. The salt is marked with the sponsor's mark IN in monogram.
