Captain Gilpin drawings
John Bernard Gilpin, 1738–1776
Collection of forty sketches pasted into two scrapbooks: 30 x 54.5 and 33 x 56 cm, signed in ink verso top 'Captain Gilpin Drawings'. He is intent on depicting wild nature in his rocky scenes, figures or buildings introduced only to enhance the power and scale of the elements. Although a number have topographical titles, their treatment is free. They reflect two moods, the dramatic and the contemplative, but particularly pleasing are those ideal landscapes where all is serene and quiet.
