Captain N. C. Travers, 3rd Bn. The Rifle Brigade, Dublin
, 1818
Nicholas Colthurst Travers (1787-1871) was an Irish officer who served in the Royal Navy and British Army between 1803 and his retirement in 1821. He joined the 95th Regiment of Foot, later the Rifle Brigade, in 1806, and his service included action in the Peninsular War and in the 1814 expedition to New Orleans.
This half-length portrait by Robert Lucius West, an Irish painter who trained in Dublin and London, shows Captain Travers in the dress uniform of 1818. Such portraits of junior officers are comparatively rare, especially of identified subjects. It is therefore of particular significance to the Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum, which exists to record the history of the regiment and its antecedents.
