Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta: Listening from Punts
Stanley Spencer, c. 1952–1954

This is a study for a large unfinished painting 'Christ preaching at Cookham Regatta' already in the GalleryÂ’s collection. A feint pencil outline of the study is drawn on the top left area of the unpainted canvas. The work has particular significance for the Gallery as the site can be viewed from the adjacent bridge over the Thames and seeing the study would add stimulation and interest for visitors. The finished painting from the Regatta Series for which this study was drawn was on loan to the gallery for 25 years until 2003 and is now in a private collection.
