Large collection of furniture and pictures. Includes: 'Piazza Navona, Rome' by a follower of Canaletto, a mahogany and brass bookcase of 1805 and early 18th century Dutch marquetry cabinet. Part of a collection of 297 works distributed to 11 public collections including 3 in Liverpool. A connoisseur and patron of the arts on Merseyside, and a generous supporter of the Art Fund, George Paimer Holt (1910-1990) played an influential role in the management of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and was a Trustee of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside at the end of his life. As a member of the leading Liverpool ship-owning family who founded the Blue Funnel Line and the grandson of Liverpool's First Lord Mayor, he was able to present very effectively the case for the arts to the business community on Merseyside.
