Communion beaker

Alexander Galloway, c. 1670–1678

© Mike Davidson, Positive Image

This communion beaker was probably made by the Aberdeen goldsmith, Alexander Galloway as it is punch-marked ‘AG’. This form of communion cup is peculiar to the North East of Scotland. Aberdeen Art Gallery has a prestigious collection of silver, ranging from 17th-century flatware and hollowware to unusual pieces by contemporary makers, but has nothing by Galloway, whose surviving work is extremely rare. This cup is one of a pair and the other one has been purchased by National Museums Scotland. It is proposed that the museums will work in partnership to ensure that both beakers are displayed together.
