Lanyon was brought in to teach at the Bath Academy of Art, then based at Corsham Court, between 1950 and 1957 with fellow artists Terry Frost and Bryan Wynter. The title of the painting, 'Corsham Towers', confirms its place of origin as Corsham Court where Lanyon was given a studio. Lanyon's time in Bath coincided with the period when he was working on 'Porthleven', his entry for the 1951 Festival of Britain exhibition. Porthleven was a major oil which represented a radical leap forward in British painting and there are similarities with Corsham Towers. This painting complements other oils and sculptures by former Bath Academy teachers in the collection.
