Art Funded by you

Deep Time Pour (For Lord Kelvin and Robert Smithson)

Mark Dion, 2001

© The artist, courtesy Fabienne Leclerc

This work was inspired by the rich, unmodernised collection displays of the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow and in particular, an experimental apparatus devised c.1887 by William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, to show the dramatic effect of flow in pitch caused by gravity over time. The sculpture also references the work of the American Robert Smithson. It exemplifies Dion's approach to art and science as mediated through museum culture, and his investigation of ideas of time, geology and taxonomy, represented through steps or ladders.
