Dogs of St Bernard Rescuing a Traveller

This dramatic print depicts two large dogs discovering a man lying in the snow, with one trying to revive him by licking his hand while the other barks. Monks approach to help at right with the monastery in the mountains beyond. The print is based on a work by Sir Edwin Landseer. It is one of a series of 1379 prints and drawings, mainly colour prints by William Dickes (1815-1842), to illustrate the history of colour printing in the 19th century. They cover various subjects such as Bible, History, Domestic Scenes and (especially) Natural History. With the exception of a few large single prints, they were generally published as book iIlustrations.
