Edward III gold nobles
Unknown artist, 1356–1377

The three nobles of Edward III were the first gold coins produced in any quantity and generally circulated, reflecting a growing economy. One coin is of a pre-Treaty period issue (1356-1360), one is a Treaty period issue (1361-69), both minted at London and one is a rare post-Treaty period coin from the Calais mint. The Treaty of Bretigny was signed in 1360 and granted Edward III sovereignty over Calais and Aquitaine; in return he renounced his claim to the French throne.
