Epping Forest

Sir Jacob Epstein, 1900–1959

© Tate, London 2009

In the 1930s Epstein embarked upon a series of landscape and flower studies which were highly unusual in his oeuvre. Renowned as an avant-garde sculptor, Epstein reverted in these works to a more orthodox subject-matter and style. The ancient woodland of Epping Forest in Essex, a large tract of uncultivated land to the north east of London, had long held a fascination for Epstein. Part of a bequest of 28 works to the Art Gallery of New South Wales by Beatrice Moresby through the Art Fund in memory of her mother Joan Morrisby.
