Flight Take-Off

Geoffrey Mann, c. 2011

© The artist / Photo: Mark Crick

Norwich was one of five museums to win a share of £75,000 to buy their selected object thanks to Art Fund Collect, an initiative in collaboration with the Crafts Council, aimed at championing contemporary craft and increasing its presence in UK collections. This sculpture is one of a series by the artist based around bird flight. Mann uses cast glass to capture the invisible movement of birdsÂ’ wings, simultaneously freezing time and capturing motion in solid yet translucent form. This is the first of MannÂ’s pieces to be acquired by a UK museum.
