Gwen John, Self-Portrait

Gwen John, 1900

In this narrow half-length portrait, the subject is posed slightly to the right, her right hand resting on the belt of her black skirt. Her dark-grey eyes look at the spectator. She has brown hair dressed up from the neck, arched eyebrows, and a rather pale complexion. Her light-brown blouse with broad sleeves has a black ribbon at the throat, while some black material is draped over her right forearm.
