Hercules and Deianeira

Jan Gossart, 1520

© Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery, University of Glasgow

Gossart studied the antique, during his visit to Rome in 1508. His paintings and prints combine elements of the classical Renaissance - most notably in the architectural settings and sculptural qualities of his figures - with a Northern approach to composition.
