Holy Family with Saint John in a Landscape
Denys Calvaert, 1593–1594

Calvaert was producing many private devotional pictures from the same compositional source at this time. This work shows typical Emilian characteristics of setting the sacred scene in a verdant landscape, combining the Flight into Egypt and the presence of St. John. The angels provide miraculous fruit and the spring water, while above there is the miraculous apparition of the cross.
