Art Funded by you

In Our Times

Shilpa Gupta, 2008

© Courtesy: The Artist and Yvon Lambert, Paris

The Mumbai-based artist Shilpa Gupta uses a range of media in an art practice that combines playfulness with intellectual rigour. This work is a sound installation exploring the politics of the Partition of India using the deceptively simple presentation of the Independence speeches of Nehru and Jinnah in tandem, broadcast through two microphones. Viewers are presented with the aspirations of the two heads of the newly created states in a format enabling them to compare and contrast the high hopes that led to tragedy and ongoing divisions on the Continent. Presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
