Ivory crucifix

David Le Marchand, 1700–1726

The quality of this crucifixion figure confirms Le Marchand's reputation as the most distinguished ivory carver working in England in the early 18th century. The subtly-modelled musculature of the torso and the heavily-bunched draperies of the loin cloth give the figure a monumentality unusual for its size. It is from the tradition of French sculpture that Le Marchand's baroque Christ is ultimately derived.
