Jane Austen in E17 & Print for a Politician

These two works share a common theme: the dark tensions inherent in organized societies, and their vulnerability. Both works are rich in historical associations which will relate to fine art, decorative art and costume collections at Manchester. 'Jane Austen in E17' references contemporary Walthamstow street scenes near Perry's studio. The genteel figures of elaborately dressed Georgian ladies taking tea and conversing are juxtaposed with layered photographic transfers illustrating contemporary culture. 'Print for a Politician' shows groups of people in a landscape setting, from academics, fundamentalists, northerners, parents and transvestites to Zoroastrians, and scattered them randomly on the surface. Perry's intention was to show the complexity of human nature and the potential of everyone to develop good and evil personas.
