These three Late Roman gold solidi coins were made at the mint of Treveri (Trier) in Germany between AD 378 - 392 and bear portraits of the Emperors Gratian, Theodosius I and Valentinian II. They represent the last offical Roman coinage to enter Britain, and have a very high gold content, evidence of the wealth present in Lincoln in the Late Roman period. They were probably buried as a hoard in the AD 390s, which may have been the only sure way of keeping such valuable objects secure in a time of strife and uncertainty.
