Lotus I & Lotus II

Sir Howard Hodgkin, 1978

'Lotus I' and 'Lotus II' are paired images from Howard Hodgkin's 'Indian Leaves' series, a richly evocative and brilliantly coloured group of water colour impressions of India painted during a two week visit there in 1978. Hodgkin has described the 'Indian Leaves' series as 'a kind of anthology of Indian images, and also a sampler of all the different kinds of language I use in my paintings, but used in an almost simplistic way'.
