Mandrils

Richard Billingham, 2005

© Richard Bellingham. Courtesy Anthony Reynolds Gallery, London

Richard Billingham’s photograph Mandrils shows a scene of these colourful primates in a zoo enclosure, complete with a panoramic painted backdrop of their native habitat.

The artist first came to public attention for his candid photographs of his parents’ home life. In his Zoo series he employs the same detached style to capture animals in their confined domestic spaces.

Billingham lives in Swansea, where Mandrils was selected by Cardiff-born artist Laura Ford for the 2018 Wakelin Award as a new acquisition for the city’s Glynn Vivian Art Gallery.
