Man's dressing gown & cap

Unknown artist, c. 1715–1720

A man's informal gown in the style of a kimono and 'Chinese' cap for undress wear. These caps and gowns were worn indoors in place of the powdered wig and fitted coat for dress wear. They were also worn to receive and entertain visitors so could be made of rich silks such as this salmon pink silk damask and pink silk lining. The maker could be English or French.
