Sharon Hayes is an American artist who came to prominence in the early 1990s.

She works primarily in video, installation and performance to explore issues such as queer theory, sexual politics and activism.

May 1st comprises five letterpress prints which feature the text of a letter to an unnamed lover. The subject is the pleasure and despair of political desire.

This work, acquired alongside a film work called Fingernails on a blackboard: Bella, now joins the collection of GoMA, Glasgow’s main gallery of contemporary art.
