Mother and Child by the Sea
Johan Christian Dahl, 1840

A romantic painting which depicts a woman and child awaiting the return of a fishing boat from a moonlit coast. According to an explanation by the artist himself, the boat contains a 'close relation', almost certainly the child's father as Dahl's father was also a fisherman.
