Mr and Mrs Andrews

Thomas Gainsborough, 1748–1749

© National Gallery, London

Double portrait of Robert Andrews (1726-1806) and his wife Frances Mary (circa 1732-1780) who married in 1748 and this may have been a marriage picture. The church tower seen in the background to the left has been identified as St. Peter's, Sudbury although the couple married at All Saints Church, Sudbury. The area of Mrs Andrews lap was never completed by Gainsborough and it is unclear what she is holding.
