Night: The Sound of Sleat

Jon Schueler had a studio on the shores of the Sound of Sleat, opposite the Isle of Skye. SchuelerÂ’s modern abstracted compositions capture the majesty and drama of the Scottish landscape, their basis in the natural world making them more easily appreciated than the extreme battles with form that characterized American Abstract Expressionism. This abstracted landscape complements contemporary painted interpretations of landscape already in the collection such as Cecil Collins, Gordon Wyllie, Alan Davie and Bet Low as well as contrasting with earlier more representational depictions such as Stanley Cursiter, DY Cameron and Horatio McCulloch.
