Rana Begum creates paintings, sculpture and immersive installations inspired by Modernist and Islamic art and architecture.
No. 670, Mesh, displayed in her solo show at the Sainsbury Centre in 2017, is considered a seminal work in her career.
Constructed from a series of yellow, grey and red modular components, the work invites interaction as viewers enter and move through it. Its dimensions and configuration are variable, making it adaptable for different exhibition spaces.
Begum was born in 1977 in Bangladesh and moved to Britain in 1983. She studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.
No. 670, Mesh relates strongly to the significant holdings of abstract art held in the Sainsbury Centre collection, including work by Josef Albers, Sonia Delaunay and Frank Stella.
