This work is part of an ongoing series that uses a diverse range of influences from Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore in Britain to international figures like Louise Bourgeois and Hans Bellmer. The sculptures are at once troublingly fleshy and yet somehow domestic. The use of everyday tights in their construction lends an oddly familiar texture and surface to practically alien forms – figures that altogether transcend gender and push at the limits of what is human. Lucas rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one of a core group of artists later famous as the YBAs or Young British Artists. She was a student at Goldsmiths alongside Damien Hirst and Gary Hume. The Arts Council Collection has been active in collecting the work of artists from this group and as a result has some key works from the period. This work perfectly complements the group of works by Lucas already in the collection and demonstrates the evolution of the artist's practice over the past 15 years.
