Pearlware jug
Josiah Wedgwood, Wedgwood pottery, 1796
Pearlware is an improved type of creamware containing a larger quantity of flint and white clay in the body and cobalt added to the glaze to counteract the creamy tone. Stamped on the base: 'Wedgwood & Co, made by Tomlinson, Foster Wedgwood and Co of Ferrybridge', the period when Ralph, nephew of Josiah, was working there. The jug is inscribed James Bouskil, Bardsea, 1796. Wakefield Art Gallery is currently closed and will open in 2011 as The Hepworth Wakefield.
