The sitter of this portrait is Sir James Grant (1679-1747), chief of Clan Grant and Member of Parliament for Inverness and later for Elgin.
He remained on the government’s side during the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. RichardWaitt began his career as a decorative painter, with his first recorded work dating from 1708. He later developed a career as a portrait painter, working extensively for Clan Grant of Castle Grant in the Scottish Highlands. Over a period of 20 years Waitt painted more than 60 portraits of the clan. This one of Sir James is among the finest.
Sir James’ grandson, also called Sir James Grant, founded the planned settlement of Grantown in 1765. This portrait now joins the collection of Grantown Museum, the centre for local history in the town and surrounding area.
