Portrait of Dr James Hutton

Sir Henry Raeburn, c. 1787

Portrait of Dr James Hutton (1756-1823) who is considered to have been the first great British geologist. Dr Hutton was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine which he later gave up in favour of agriculture. Hutton is shown seated at a table with a pile of geological specimens in front of him.
