Portrait of Emma, Lady Hamilton

George Romney, 1785

This lively, short half-length portrait shows Lady Hamilton, (1861? - 1815) with her head tilted to the right, shoulders turned further to the right, and hands not seen. Her hazel eyes look at the spectator, and she has reddish brown hair, darker brown eyebrows, with lips slightly parted. She wears a white frock with a high waistband and, on the top of her head, a white scarf with touches of blue and red. A number of pentimenti, including two concentric sepia lines, fall behind the head on to her shoulder.
