Portrait of Henry, Prince of Wales,1594-1612
Robert Peake, 1610

This whole-length portrait, lit from the front, is of the brilliant eldest son of James I, and favourite brother of Princess Elizabeth, later Queen of Bohemia. He stands in an interior, wearing a cream doublet and trunks embroidered with scarlet and blue, scarlet stockings and bearing the Garter below his left knee. To the left we see a window and garden landscape, while to the right there is a rich brownish-purple hanging similar to the covering on the table, on which his plumed hat rests. A turkish carpet embellishes the floor. The jewel on the hat includes Henry's monogram H, and the three feathers motif, worked into the border of the hanging, indicates that he is already Prince of Wales. The landscape suggests one of the Thames-side palaces rather than the Prince's official residence at St James.
