Portrait of William III

Sir Godfrey Kneller, c. 1690

William of Orange, technically William II of Scotland and III of England, is a figure of prime importance in late-seventeenth-century Scottish history. Not only did his accession to the British throne in 1688 lead directly to the Jacobite risings, his reign saw many of the events which forced more and more Scots to conclude that the personal Union of the Crowns was unworkable without an accompanying union of the Parliaments.
