Rafts on the Upper Rhine
Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1830–1850

Depicts a river flowing through a deep gorge with a string of timber about to enter it. A church, houses and boats can be seen at a quay. On the opposite side of the river, there are buildings and a tower, and beyond, a fortress crowning a precipice. Based on reminiscences of the Rhine, specifically of Assmannshausen.
