Reclining Putto

A reclining putto, looking down to left, study for a frieze. He leans to the left, supporting himself on his right elbow; he looks downwards towards the left, while his left arm is raised to support what appears to be a drapery, the end of which billows out in front of him. Part of an album of drawings belonging to Lord James Cavendish MP (d 1741), son of the second Duke of Devonshire (1665-1729), founder of the great collection of drawings at Chatsworth. The collection of drawings form an interesting relic of the great age of collecting in England.
