Retired Form
David Maljkovic, 1) 2008; 2–4) 2009
This installation consists of a film, a silver screen, a spot light and three photographic collages all entitled ‘Retired Form’. The Croatian artist Maljkovic was inspired by a monument to victims of the Second World War, located in a public park in Zagreb and uses this work to explore issues relating to the transition from communism to capitalism in recent Croatian history. The film depicts a group of people as they approach a large metallic sculpture and stand respectful and seemingly mesmerized by its presence. The photographic collages offer a close study of the form and material of the sculpture. The work raises ideas about the legacy of public sculpture, the ideals of artists and the social and political motivations of artists and commissioners. Comparisons can be made with related artists and contexts in Scotland and the UK. This work was presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
