Sacre Conversazione: St. Berndino and a female Saint presenting a Donor
Francesco Bissolo, 1492–1554

The Virgin and Child in the centre of this painting are accompanied by Saint Berndino on the left and a female saint to the right of the picture. St. Berndino presents a plaque, whilst the female saint holds a burning lamp in one hand and presents the donor with the other hand. This painting was part of a collection of 117 works belonging to the industrialist and engineer F.D. Lycett Green and bequeathed to York through the Art Fund, in 1955, in recognition of the remarkable efforts made after the Second World War by its curator to transform it into a gallery of international importance.
