In Self Portrait 1, Conroy's gaze is downward so that we are immediately intrigued by the artist's self-absorption and introspection. Pink, black and white strips mark out the space in which he presents himself, the white strips forming a cross-like configuration. This immediately makes the viewer feel that some sort of inner struggle or turmoil is ongoing.
