Art Funded by you

Shallow Level Sequence, Version 2

Phillip Allen, 2004

© The artist

AllenÂ’s paintings depict an imagined space which is always framed at the top and bottom by bands of luscious tactile rosettes of thick paint. From the empty centre of each painting springs a form or pattern that plays with colour and perspective suggesting a depth of space and a fantastical architecture that is at once intriguing and playful. This work enhances Southampton's collection of contemporary British abstract painting complimenting existing holdings of works by artists such as Fiona Rae and Peter Davies. This work was purchased with additional funding from the David and Liza Brown Bequest Fund through the Art Fund.
