Art Funded by you

Silence

Sir Howard Hodgkin, 1997-2004

© Howard Hodgkin

Hodgkin spent 16 years studying and teaching at the Bath Academy of Art but this is the first work by the artist to be acquired by the gallery.

This work represents a significant stylistic development from the last decade. The application of thin layers of paint using broad brushes creates a feeling of great spontaneity and painterliness.

The painting evokes an almost mesmeric sense of stillness. The range from glowing orange and terracotta through burnt siena to near black, is suggestive of the tranquillity and mystery associated with the half light.
