Slopes of Glyder Fawr, Llyn Adwal, Caernarvonshire, Wales

John Piper, 1947

© The Piper Estate

This drawing belongs to the group of Welsh mountain studies dating from the mid-1940s which are considered by many to be among the finest of Piper's work in this medium. Not only are these powerful and dramatic compositions, but they also reveal an almost Ruskinian appreciation of the geological structure of the locality. They also provide a 20th-century link with the Welsh mountain compositions produced by the leading watercolourists of the Romantic period who included Wales in their itineraries of 'picturesque' tours around the British Isles.
